Once a pictorial quilt top is complete, the artist often uses machine sewing and free-motion stitching to complete the quilt. Using different colors along with various specialty threads, the quilter is able to create shadows, texture, and dimension on their pictorial quilt. Hand embroidery stitching can be used for added details as well.

ABSTRACT QUILTS

Like abstract art, abstract quilts are unique compositions in which the artist will abandon conventional use of form and color. Abstract quilts are not meant to resemble a scene, particular pattern, or item, but rather an independent work that conveys a representation of the artist’s ideas and emotions.

CHARACTERISTICS

Some abstract quilts are designed to be viewed as pieces of artwork, while others are purely functional. The artist often employs traditional piecing and assembling techniques when they are useful and will abandon quilting rules when they do not serve to enhance the piece of art. Some abstract quilts are intentionally designed and then precisely constructed to exact specifications. Other abstract quilt artists approach their fiber art without a specific plan and use improvisational piecing and spontaneity to let their design develop organically.

A wide range of colors is used in abstract quilting. Many quilts make use of starkly contrasting fabrics, while others stick to a more monochromatic palette. Abstract quilters often employ large expanses of negative space and blocks of solid color in their designs, but they are just as likely to use printed fabrics in large doses with little breathing room between them as well. Shapes and forms may be used repetitively or stand out as a singular motif.

MATERIALS USED

Like most art quilters, abstract quilt artists employ a wide range of textiles. Almost anything goes. Cottons, silks, and wools are used together and separately as well as a wide range of textured, dyed, and one-of-a kind printed fabrics. Free-motion stitching employs solid, variegated, and specialty threads and is used to enhance an artist’s design. Other embellishments such as paint, trims, hand stitching, and yarn may be included liberally or sparsely in the design of an abstract quilt.
